Godzilla x Kong

Times are pretty stressful for college students right now. That much I think we can all agree on. I’m by no means a doctor, but I do know that two hours of over-the-top action and giant monsters is enough to make one forget their current issues, if only for a bit. That’s exactly what I got out of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
While this may have been my first MonsterVerse movie, I knew enough about the franchise to know where this latest installment picked up. Going ahead and getting my only real complaints out of the way, this movie might’ve had one too many subplots going on at once. Additionally, for a movie with Godzilla in the title, the big atomic lizard takes a hard backseat to Kong, spending the majority of his limited screen time charging up for the final battle. With that in mind, it is nice to see some more development for Kong’s storyline. The new additions of Suko, Skar King and Shimo were welcome, as well as the return of an iconic Titan. To the movie’s credit, I was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoyed the human characters more than I expected. While nothing extraordinary, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens and Kaylee Hottle do bring enough life to their roles to make them engaging. The action scenes are consistently intense and fun to watch, although there might’ve been a bit more creature gore than I was expecting. So, like I said, about what I expected for a MonsterVerse movie.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire doesn’t set any new standards, but right now, I’m happy to watch a movie that doesn’t require me to think.
