Kiki’s Delivery Service

When I began writing reviews, I told myself I wouldn’t review movies from Studio Ghibli. Not because I didn’t like them, far from it. I was just worried nothing I could say would do them enough justice, as they’ve produced some of the most thought-provoking and awe-inspiring animated movies I’ve ever seen. However, after my latest viewing of Kiki’s Delivery Service, I feel as though I finally found the words I’ve been looking for.
For those who haven’t seen it, Kiki’s Delivery Service is a story about a 13-year-old witch who leaves home to train for a year in a distant coastline city. With only her broomstick, her wits, and her wisecracking black cat Jiji, Kiki begins a flying delivery service. Throughout her journey, she learns to work through failure and find her inner strength and inspiration, making new friends along the way. From this description, one might assume the movie’s rather simple. Fortunately, this is Studio Ghibli we’re talking about, and one of their greatest strengths is finding ways to make the ordinary extraordinary.
Kiki’s Delivery Service is a feature that’s simple in concept, but powerful in execution. The animation is gorgeous, the score is soothing, and the characters are all memorable and likable (As an added bonus, the English dub is honestly good, too!). With that said, the movie’s message is its greatest strength. Just like Kiki, many of us struggle to find purpose and fulfillment in something we enjoy doing. There will be setbacks and failures along that road, but if we’re willing to step back, take a break, and remember to show kindness to others, we might just find the kick we need to persevere. Kiki’s Delivery Service is a truly magical picture, and I’d highly recommend you give her a visit.
