The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

This review goes out to my loving and supportive Grandmama. Happy birthday!

Do you remember when movies were allowed to simply be fun? Or when cartoons turned the laws of reality on their heads and really let loose with wackiness? Have you missed the artistry of hand-drawn animation on the big screen? If you answered yes to any of these, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is just right for you.

Directed by Pete Browngardt of Max’s Looney Tunes Cartoons, this movie marks a triumphant return for both 2D animation and the classic madcap roots of Looney Tunes. Porky Pig and Daffy Duck (Eric Bauza) star as best friends who, after taking a job at a bubblegum factory, end up in the midst of an alien mind-control takeover. Together with Petunia Pig (Candi Milo), the duo must learn to embrace their differences in order to save the world. The comedy comes in such abundance and variety that, even if one joke doesn’t land, it’ll more than make up for it after. Likewise, the characters make up for their (mostly) predictable arcs and dynamics with their bombastic personalities, unexpected heart, and sensational voice acting by non-celebrities. Bauza, Milo, and especially Peter MacNicol give it their all with every line, proving why professional voice actors deserve a seat at the table for theatrical releases. The animation is vibrant, smooth, and shows nothing but understanding of and reverence for its timeless source material. This movie serves as a testament to the notion that films can simply be undiluted fun if they wish.

Whether you’re an animation supporter or simply need a laugh, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is a must watch. If you want more movies like this going forward, support it at your nearest theater and see it at your earliest convenience.
