Spoiler/Trigger warning: this review contains mild spoilers and brief discussion of sensitive materials like depression and suicide.
This week, I’d like to do something a little bit different for my review, as I can’t realistically talk about this movie without getting into spoilers. Instead, I’d like to talk about the potential value that movies or media outside your comfort zone might have to offer. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be rattling at times, but it may make you stronger than you were before. That’s what happened to me when I unexpectedly watched The Iron Claw.
Directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw is a biographical drama focusing on the seemingly unending string of tragedies that befell the Von Erich family, one of the most renowned families in professional wrestling. In particular, it focuses on Kevin Von Erich and his relationships with his brothers and father. Played by Zac Efron in perhaps his most intense role to date, Kevin fights many unrelenting obstacles, not only in the ring, but in the face of loss and grief. Unless you’re familiar with the Von Erich family’s story, you’ll be in for an unflinchingly brutal ride. Additionally, you can trust me when I say you’ll loathe one of the characters by the end of the picture.
I still remember how I felt as I left the theater. This movie rocked me to my foundation, yet I felt stronger for having stuck it out. If anything, I’m grateful to The Iron Claw for teaching me this: life can be cruel and unfair, but no matter how overwhelming the sadness or hopelessness might feel, you have to be the one to pin it down before the final bell. If not, there will be more besides you who’ll be impacted by it. I don’t know if I’d recommend this movie on a whim, but it was certainly a worthwhile watch.
