Wicked

Special shoutout to my friend, Jadyn, for teaching me what does and doesn’t work in movie musical adaptations.
Seeing as I loved the stage production, it should come as little surprise that I was excited for Wicked. Fortunately, that excitement was rewarded with a cinematic experience that left me positively enchanted.
Based on the first act of the Broadway musical, Wicked explores the complex backstory and friendship between the eventual Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda. The former, Elphaba, makes for a beautifully tragic and sympathetic lead, and Cynthia Erivo’s impeccable singing chops will leave you breathless with every song. Likewise, the latter, Galinda, played phenomenally by Ariana Grande, dominates every scene she’s in, be it comedic and dramatic. The pair’s chemistry and the commendable pacing makes the progression of their relationship feel genuine and earned.
Erivo and Grande were undoubtedly the highlights, there are other elements worth praising. The supporting cast (i.e. Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, etc.) also do their respective characters justice, even if a few of them could improve on their singing. On that note, every song from the first act is included, many of which bring choreography and spectacle worthy of the original. Finally, in a time where it seems CGI has largely taken over, the practical set pieces were a welcome addition that made the wonderful world of Oz feel real. However, if I had to raise any complaints with Wicked, it would have to be against the lighting, as it was occasionally distracting from the film.
Overall, this may very well be the most fun I had at a new movie in the past year. Whether you’re a fan of the stage musical or not, it’s more than worth the runtime. Watch where and when you can for a truly “wicked” watch.
